Mathematical Opportunities

Summer REU opportunity

Research Experience for Undergraduates / Undergraduate students

Many biological systems that are composed of coupled oscillating elements, such as groups of heart cells and neural tissue, exhibit interesting behavior. For example, the interactions between these oscillating elements allows for traveling and spiral waves to form. Interest in these patterns stems from experiments which suggest that electrical activity in the heart in the form of spiral waves is responsible for conditions like tachycardia and cardiac fibrillation. In this project we will explore the formation, dynamics, and control of spiral waves in oscillatory media using tools from dynamical systems and partial differential equations.

The deadline for applications is March 4th, 2021. Interested students should complete an application form and submit a personal statement, transcript (unofficial OK), and one reference letter. Your personal statement should include your future career goals and your reasons for applying to this program. The application form and further instructions on how to submit the materials can be found in the project's website.
