BECA exists to provide quality, affordable bilingual education to the educationally disenfranchised while fostering meaningful cultural exchange. Our volunteer-driven bilingual school model creates an environment in which Central American students learn from dedicated Summer Camp Counselors, and those counselors learn from the community in which they are immersed.
BECA aims to provide its counselors with a challenging, transformative experience that gives an in-depth understanding of grassroots international development, underserved Central American communities, bilingual teaching strategies, and community capacity building techniques. Afterwards, BECA counselors go on to become Fulbright scholars, micro-finance specialists, diplomats, educators, World Bank employees, non-profit executives, and law and public policy students.
Every year, BECA assembles a team of committed volunteers to lead a 3-week summer camp for students from Santa Monica Bilingual School and San Jeronimo Bilingual School. This camp serves a bridge between academic years to ensure our students have access to English language teaching, and fun, while not in school!
The Summer Camp Counselor is a team member who plays an integral role in the education of our students. The highlight of this job is the genuine nature of the experience: leading a classroom of 10 students, supporting fellow counselors in the classroom, getting to know your students and their families, and immersing oneself Honduran culture (through home visits, weekend trips, and service projects).
Because the Summer Camp is a supplemental program, BECA recoups the program's expenses through donations paid by Summer Camp Counselors who wish to participate. In exchange for this experience, we ask that you contribute or fundraise $1,000 for the BECA program to help defray costs (food, accommodation, training, materials, and a high-speed internet connection). A reduced contribution may be available for college students with demonstrated need.
Please not, there is no prior Spanish knowledge needed, and all majors are welcome to apply!
