SCUDEM - SIMIODE Challenge Using Differential Equations Modeling is an opportunity for three-member student teams (high school and undergraduate) from around the world to build and present differential equations models in one of three areas (a) physics/engineering, (b) chemistry/life sciences, and (c) social sciences/humanities.
Students work on their model of choice from 19 October–12 November 2024 and submit a ten-minute video for judging. In past years teams have received on average 10 judges’ reports with constructive feedback and also received one of three awards, Outstanding, Meritorious, or Successful. The recognition of participation, the joy of working with others on modeling, and the feedback of judges make this a wonderful experience for students in high school and undergraduate curricula.
SCUDEM VIII 2023 was supported by MathWorks. Student teams were provided a FREE copy of MATLAB® and tutorials.
Registration fee is $33USD/student. Registration opens 1 July 2024 and closes 19 October 2024.
We will return to our policy of FREE registration for students in Developing Countries in an effort to widely share the excitement of doing differential equations through modeling. See https://www.usaid.gov/sites/default/files/2022-05/310maa.pdf.
Please see https://qubeshub.org/community/groups/scudem for complete description and information on the current SCUDEM IX 2024 and links to previous SCUDEM problem statements and student submissions, including video presentations from Outstanding Award teams for years of the SCUDEM experience at our SIMIODE YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/c/SIMIODE. You may also see presentations on how teams prepared and the meaning to them of participation, from ten of the Outstanding Teams at our international online SIMIODE EXPO 2024 conference here - https://qubeshub.org/community/groups/simiode/expo/2024 .
We are seeking Coaches to organize teams and Judges to give constructive feedback to teams. We ask Judges to view three of the ten-minute video submissions related to one of the three problems. Many judges enjoy the opportunity so much they view more than three videos. Further, Coaches may serve as Judges of submissions, just not their own. We will be posting a call for Judges as well as Teams and Coaches once registration is open 1 July 2024.
SCUDEM is sponsored by SIMIODE - Systemic Initiative for Modeling Investigations and Opportunities with Differential Equations, a non-profit organization in the United States - https://qubeshub.org/community/groups/simiode. SIMIODE offers FREE Open Education Resources in support of modeling to motivate teaching differential equations, a pivotal STEM course. SIMIODE provides FREE, hundreds of completely downloadable and customizable Modeling Scenarios and Potential Modeling Scenario Ideas in a rich Community of Practice.
In addition to SCUDEM outreach, SIMIODE offers (1) a very low-cost textbook, Differential Equations: A Toolbox for Modeling the World, which is receiving excellent reviews and reception https://qubeshub.org/community/groups/simiode/textbook (2) an annual EXPO International online conference in February of each year https://qubeshub.org/community/groups/simiode/expo . SIMIODE EXPO 2025 is planning this three-day event, 14-16 February 2025. Join our community and share the experiences of teaching through modeling.
