The transformer that provides electricity to the AMS building in Providence went down on Sunday, April 22. The restoration of our email, website, AMS Bookstore and other systems is almost complete. We are currently running on a generator but overnight a new transformer should be hooked up and (fingers crossed) we should be fine by 8:00 (EDT) Wednesday morning. This issue has affected selected phones, which should be repaired by the end of today. No email was lost, although the accumulated messages are only just now being delivered so you should expect some delay.
Thanks for your patience.
"Match of thedata," by Jonathan Trout. Nature Science Update, 23 May 2001.
Trout summarizes results of Yi-Cheng Zhang who has concluded that: "The moreinformation people have, the happier the world can be." That is, providinginformation is not a zero-sum game. Zhang studied this problem in the frameworkof the stable marriage problem (can a matchmaker arrange marriages so that notwo people would rather elope together than stay with their spouses?). He foundthat more information in the community led to "happier" marriages. The field ofresearch this involves is called econophysics. The full paper is titled"Happier World with More Information" and appeared in Physica A(Proceedings of the NATO ARW on Application of Physics in Economic Modelling,8-10 February 2001, Prague).
