The People section of Random Samples lists two mathematicians who recently wonawards. Shiing-shen Chern of Nankai University in Tianjin, China received a onemillion dollar prize from the Shaw Prize Foundation for "his role in developingglobal differential geometry." Mikhael Gromov of France's Institut des HautesÉtudes Scientifiques and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciencesat New York University won the US$150,000 Frederic Esser Nemmers Prize inMathematics "for his contribution to modern geometry." The Nemmers Prize isawarded by Northwestern University.
