It is my pleasure to congratulate and welcome the new class of AMS Fellows, honored for their outstanding contributions to the mathematical sciences and to our profession. This year's class was selected from a large and excellent pool of candidates, highlighting the many ways in which our profession is advanced, and I look forward to working with them in service to our community.

Important points about the Fellows of the AMS selection process:

  • The AMS Fellows Selection Committee accepts nominations for Fellows between February 1 and March 31 each year.
  • New AMS Fellows are selected from among those nominated. The target number of new Fellows is determined by the AMS Council.
  • To be eligible for nomination to AMS Fellowship, an individual must be an AMS member for the year in which they are nominated as well as the prior year. The prior year's membership must be in place by July 31 of the prior year.

Details of the Fellows program, including a history of its enactment, can be found in the AMS Fellows Program Document .

The goals of the Fellows program are:

  • To create an enlarged class of mathematicians recognized by their peers as distinguished for their contributions to the profession.
  • To honor not only the extraordinary but also the excellent.
  • To lift the morale of the profession by providing an honor more accessible than those currently available.
  • To make mathematicians more competitive for awards, promotion, and honors when they are being compared with colleagues from other disciplines.
  • To support the advancement of more mathematicians in leadership positions in their own institutions and in the broader society.

The responsibilities of Fellows are:

  • To take part in the election of new Fellows,
  • To present a “public face” of excellence in mathematics, and
  • To advise the President and/or the Council on public matters when requested.

Election as a Fellow can be revoked for serious abrogations of these responsibilities.
