Abstract:

We examine the abelianization of G. Baumslag and Solitar’s example of a one-generator group that is not residually finite. In particular, the nonfinitely-generated commutator subgroup is shown to be not residually finite. We also review a specific example of a cyclic extension of a residually finite group that is not residually finite.
