It publicizes activities of the Society and provides information to its members, and it publishes editorial content, including expository articles, articles on professional issues facing mathematicians, reviews, and other items of interest to the readership. The former items are provided by the AMS Office of Communications and Marketing and by the Office of the Secretary. Editorial content is overseen by the Editorial Board of the Notices.
Principal Activities
The Editorial Board of the Notices solicits, invites, reviews, and edits contributions. These reflect a wide range of mathematical interests and perspectives. The Editorial Board must be respectful of the spectrum of opinions among members of the Society and mindful that publication in the Notices confers the imprimatur of the Society in the eyes of readers. Before acceptance, material to be published in the Notices will be available to all editors for a commenting period set by the Chief Editor. During this time any member of the Editorial Board may raise a concern about any item that is factually incorrect, that is opinion but not labeled as such, that does not meet journalistic standards, or that contains opinions controversial to a portion of the Society's members. Any item about which concern has been raised by any member of the Editorial Board or by AMS staff must be discussed with the Chief Executive Officer, the President and the Chair of the Board of Trustees prior to acceptance, with disagreements settled by the Board of Trustees.
The Chief Editor determines, in cooperation with the production editors in Providence, the number of articles per issue and the date of publication of individual articles. Except by explicit advance permission from the Board of Trustees, no one issue of the Notices may contain more pages than 10% of the annual page budget set for the Notices by the Board of Trustees and no volume may exceed the annual page budget. Articles can be added to the backlog for later publication to meet these requirements.
