U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics AMS Representative

General Description

  • One representative serves a four year term which expires on October 31

Principal Activities

The U.S. National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) promotes theoretical and applied mechanics in the United States, represents the United States in the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), and represents IUTAM at the National Academies. The USNC/TAM meets once a year for two days in Washington DC (with zoom option, but attendance in person is expected), usually in early May. The exception is that the US National Congress of Applied Mechanics (USNCTAM, organized jointly with a host university) is held every four years (in even years not divisible by 4), usually in late June at a conference site determined by the host university. In those years, the USNC/TAM meeting is held at the Congress site, usually the weekend before the Congress starts. AMS representative responsibilities: Provide a liaison between USNC/TAM and the American Mathematical Society, Participate in at least one assigned subcommittee (these usually do their work by zoom/email, etc. as determined by the subcommittee chair), with optional participation in other USNC/TAM activities, Promote the activities of the USNC/TAM within the AMS, Identify candidates within the AMS for USNC/TAM activities, e.g., K-12 outreach, organization of the IUTAM symposia, etc., Help with committee fundraising activities, Nominate liaisons to Science Boards via the USNC/TAM nominations subcommittee. The USNC/TAM is increasingly involved in outreach and promotional activities that seek to make broader impacts. The USNC/TAM is also mindful of building a diverse committee membership. After terms of service on USNC/TAM have ended, committee alumni remain connected to select activities and broader impact initiatives that they were associated with during their period of service.
