Program
What can I expect at the virtual Department Chairs Workshop?
This online workshop will provide an opportunity to share experiences and reflect on what math department chairs, math departments, and colleges and universities are doing to react to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the emerging issues have to do with resources, handling stress (students, staff and faculty), and how to deliver our curriculum under new paradigms.
The workshop will take place in a virtual format, the specific platform is yet undecided. All registered participants will be contacted when a decision has been made. You will be able to engage with your colleagues and speakers throughout the workshop program and in dedicated networking sessions.
Where can I find the schedule for the workshop?
Workshop agenda can be found on the webpage at www.ams.org/chairsworkshop2021 and will be provided to all registered participants prior to the workshop.
Will the workshop be recorded?
Only the workshop presentations will be recorded and made available to registered participants after the workshop.
Can I participate if I live outside the U.S.?

What does AMS do to ensure a safe virtual environment during the workshop?
The virtual department chairs workshop will only be accessible to registered participants. We ask all participants to refer to the Welcoming Environment Policy and our Policy Statement on Anti-Harassment.
Violations may be reported confidentially and anonymously to 1-855-282-5703 or at www.mathsociety.ethicspoint.com. The reporting mechanism ensures privacy while alerting the AMS to the situation.
What are the minimum system configurations to participate in the virtual workshop?
You will be able to join from a PC or Mac, and will need a webcam to be seen, and a microphone to be heard. We recommend a headset with a microphone for best audio quality.
What can I do if the video on my screen keeps freezing or stopping and re-buffering during the workshop?
This may happen because you have a slow internet connection or there is heavy traffic on your WiFi connection. To alleviate these problems, you may try to upgrade to a faster connection, reduce the number of applications you have running, or use a laptop or desktop computer to participate, versus a tablet.
What can I do if I have difficulty with sound in a session?
Audio is projected through your computer speakers. Be sure your computer is equipped with speakers or use headphones. Make certain that the speaker volume is not muted on your computer.
I have a question that has not been answered here. Where can I ask a question?
Questions prior to the workshop can be directed to chairsworkshop@ams.org. More information about where to direct questions during the workshop will be provided to registrants prior to the workshop on January 14.
