Browder has been a professor at Princeton University since 1964. He is a leading topologist of his generation. He is one of the inventors of surgery theory, which unifies methods and techniques from several branches of topology and brings them to bear on the classification of manifolds. Browder is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Browder is a Fellow of the AMS.
