3. George William Hill (1838-1914)

President, 1895-1896

George William Hill was recognized internationally as an outstanding researcher in the area of mathematical astronomy. He made major contributions to the study of planetary motion and gravity, and celestial mechanics. He was very interested in the teaching of mathematics in secondary schools, and attended many congresses, scientific meetings and academic functions. Hill was a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
